The principles of feng shui

Chi

Chi refers to the energy that surges through all living things. Feng shui aims to allow chi to move more fluidly through spaces. When chi is blocked or suppressed, it’s said to lead to feelings of stagnation, stress, and imbalance, like how cluttered spaces can result in feeling overwhelmed.

The five elements

There are five elements central to achieving feng shui: wood, fire, earth, metal, and water:

• Fire: full of passion, red and orange colors, triangular shapes, sunlit spaces, lit candles
• Water: good fortune; growth; emotional well-being; black, dark blue, and dark gray colors; wavy shapes; glass and crystalline items
• Wood: creativity, plants, earthy colors like green and brown, wooden furniture
• Earth: strength and stability; landscape pictures; low, flat surfaces; earthy tones, like brown, green, and beige
• Metal: logic and lucidity; round or oval shapes; any metal objects made from iron, aluminum, or gold; stones; and white, gray, and silver tones

Bagua

This is the energy map: a bagua map is a tool used in feng shui that divides a space into nine zones, each representing a different aspect of life:

• Wealth and prosperity: located in the back-left corner of a space, wood element, purple, green, and gold colors
• Fame and reputation: the back-center of a space, fire element, red colors
• Love and relationships: back-right corner of a space; earth element; pink, red, and white colors
• Family and health: middle-left of a space, wood element, green and blue colors
• Center: center of a space; earth element; yellow, orange, and brown colors; represents overall harmony
• Child creativity: middle right of a space, metal element, white and pastels
• Knowledge and wisdom: front-left corner of a space; earth element; blue, green, and black colors
• Career and life: front center of a space; water element; black and dark blue
• Compassion: front-right corner of a space, represents metal, gray and white colors, represents support and travel
