Voltas takes a digital leap with Microsoft Azure VMWare Solution

Voltas recognized the need for a future-ready technology strategy to achieve its goal of becoming a resilient, agile, and future-ready enterprise. Therefore, Voltas embarked on a cloud transformation journey to modernize its legacy systems.

The Microsoft solution’s scalability, compatibility with existing applications, and security features were perfectly suited for Voltas, and it migrated over 250 on-premises VMware applications to Azure and transitioned to RISE with SAP on Azure.

Voltas expanded its cloud presence from 0% in 2022 to 60% in 2024 with Microsoft, unlocking substantial benefits across cost, agility, security, and business continuity. The cloud-based infrastructure has enhanced operational efficiency.

“A primary criterion for us was zero disruption to operations while transitioning to the cloud. After evaluating multiple options, we found Microsoft’s solution to be the best fit—scalable, highly compatible with our internal applications and third-party solutions, and equipped with advanced built-in security features.”

Debanjan Chakraborty, Head IT Infrastructure, Voltas Limited

Voltas Limited is a leading Indian multinational specializing in air conditioning, engineering solutions, and home appliances. Established in 1954, it operates across 100 countries on six continents and is a member of the esteemed Tata Group.
With the largest market share in India's air conditioning segment, Voltas continues to set industry benchmarks. Recognized as India's most trusted air conditioner brand in 2024 by TRA’s Brand Trust Report and a multiple-time recipient of the National Energy Conservation Award from the Ministry of Power, Voltas remains committed to technological innovation and energy efficiency, reinforcing its leadership in the industry.

Need to modernize IT operations

Operating in an on-premises environment, Voltas faced mounting challenges—rising costs, aging hardware, and escalating license renewal fees, which were projected to surge by 250% over three years. Additional expenses for colocation at data centers and managed services further strained operational budgets. Meanwhile, outdated systems posed serious risks to reliability and performance, and the absence of an effective disaster recovery plan and advanced security controls left critical applications vulnerable to cybersecurity threats.
Recognizing the need for a future-ready technology strategy, Voltas embarked on a cloud transformation journey to enhance efficiency, drive innovation, and future-proof its operations.

"A primary criterion for us was zero disruption to operations while transitioning to the cloud," says Debanjan Chakraborty, Head of IT Infrastructure, Voltas. “After evaluating multiple options, we found Microsoft’s solution to be the best fit—scalable, highly compatible with our internal applications and third-party solutions, and equipped with advanced built-in security features.”

To execute this transformation, Voltas partnered with Cloud4C to implement Azure VMware Solution, migrating over 250 on-premises VMware applications to Azure. The company also transitioned to RISE with SAP on Azure.
Despite the migration taking place during the festive season—one of Voltas' peak business periods—the transition was seamless, with zero disruptions to operations. The project, which began in November 2024, was successfully completed by January 2025.

"Microsoft’s solution met our needs—seamless integration, strong security, and scalability" shares Gyan Pandey, Chief Digital Officer, Voltas. "The transition was smooth with no issues reported. Microsoft helped retain existing URLs, resolve VMware licensing, and provided excellent support, enabling us to modernize apps without disruption."
