From our vantage point, one could easily assume that the Internet fol¬lowed a deliberate, highly rational, and even obvious path from its be¬ginnings to today’s dominant networking technology. This talk will ex¬plore the unintended consequences of this and perhaps any major technological advance. What are the differences in conceptualization, anticipation, and realization of a technology, and how do those differences affect its ultimate imple¬mentation and adoption in the marketplace? How does the way tech¬nology is funded, evaluated, and invented affect the eventual outcome?

Glenn Kowack was the founding CEO of EU¬net, Europe’s first commercial and multinational ISP, which sold to Qwest Communications for $155 million in 1998. He has spent 30 years developing, running, founding, advising, and funding start-ups, be¬fore and with venture capital, pre- and post-bubble, in California, Illinois, Michigan, New York, the Middle East, across Europe, and from setting up global Internet institutions.
