Research talk: Optimizing the cloud supply chain
- Konstantina Mellou | Microsoft Research
- Microsoft Research Summit 2021 | Cloud Intelligence/AIOps
The cloud supply chain includes multiple business-critical stages, such as procuring hardware from multiple suppliers, building racks in datacenters and placing servers on top. While supply chain management has been widely studied, the cloud domain brings several new challenges, such as conversion of demand units into hardware requirements, satisfying power and cooling constraints of novel datacenter architectures, and decommissioning servers in a timely manner. Join Microsoft Senior Researcher Konstantina Mellou, from the Cloud Operations Research (CORE) group at Microsoft Research Redmond, to learn more about the optimization of the hardware deployment process, which involves selecting the supplier and shipping method, as well as placing the servers in proper locations. She will discuss some of the challenges and practical insights, as well as ongoing research on dealing with stochastic demands and power stranding.
