The boundary between conferences and journals is blurring in computer science and information science. This perspective identifies probably causal factors as well as unintended consequences that are undermining research communities. I identify some of the experiments that have been undertaken to reduce the stress. I describe conference–journal hybrids, and also a model that might move in the other direction to restore the community maintenance function of conferences.
