Guoqing Liu (刘国庆) is a Senior Researcher at Microsoft Research AI for Science. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), in a joint PhD program between USTC and Microsoft Research Asia (MSRA), advised by Dr. Tie-Yan Liu and Prof. Nenghai Yu. Before pursuing his Ph.D., he completed his Bachelor’s degree at USTC in 2016.
He believes that humans will create AI agents for a broad spectrum of practical applications in the real world. Recently, he is devoted to making that happen in scientific discovery. His research interests mainly lie in reinforcement learning, large language models, high performance computing, game intelligence, and AI for Science. He is one of the key developers of Project Suphx. They built the world-best Mahjong AI, Suphx, which achieved 10 DAN on the Tenhou platform in mid-2019.
