Systems of intelligence are reinventing the manufacturing landscape

TR Pointer_300Technology has always been the spark for change and empowerment. Today technology is increasingly inside everything; data volumes continue to rise generated by sensors and other “things”; and connectivity has become universal, leveraged by cloud services that fuel intelligent action. The opportunity for manufacturers to think and operate like a digital company is disrupting markets, shaping growth, and providing the catalyst for new business models, products, services, and experiences.

The pervasive nature of technology is redefining the business landscape by enabling digital transformation. Manufacturers have a unique opportunity to reinvent their business processes to enable systems of intelligence that help draw better insight out of data and convert it to intelligent action. It used to be that businesses designed, built, produced, and shipped a product, then customers bought it—that was the end of the cycle. Now organizations are building in continuous feedback loops—sensors in product, after-market services, customer feedback from a variety of channels.

Transformation requires these rich systems of intelligence, which represent the combination of technology, people, and process that enable these feedback loops. These systems define an organization’s competitiveness and ability to change the entire landscape of the industries in which it participates by allowing manufacturers to deliver not just a manufactured product, but also value-added business services that provide a complete connected customer experience. It is this connecting of people, processes, things, and data securely across the company that is the cornerstone of digital business.

In a new article in The Record, Worldwide Managing Director of Discrete Manufacturing at Microsoft Sanjay Ravi explores what is possible when manufacturers embrace a different way of bringing together people, data, and processes to create value for their customers through systems of intelligence.
